Campuses are turning to laptops for students

Article Abstract:

A growing number of universities and colleges are requiring students to operate laptop computers. Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, began issuing IBM Thinkpads and printers to freshmen starting in 1996 as part of a $3,000 tuition hike. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill mandates laptop use for its business school and medical school students, and freshmen will begin using computers in 2000. Laptops also have become a requirement or necessity at Drew University in Madison, NJ, and Valley City State University in Valley City, ND. Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania is among the schools that students are accusing of widening the socioeconomic field because of its laptop requirements. The University of North Carolina, meanwhile, said it reached its decision after realizing that 50% of undergraduates already brought computers to campus and that 25% planned to buy them while in college.
