Canada backs Mexico in court challenge to set aside Metalclad ruling

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning a protest by Mexico against an arbitration ruling in support of a $16.7 claim by US hazardous waste disposal corporation Metalclad against Mexico are examined, focusing on Canada's support of Mexico. Topics include the requirement under the North American Free Trade Agreement for Mexico to provide fair and equitable treatment to Metalclad, the manner in which Mexican environmental groups interrupted Metalclad's business, and issues of national sovereignty as they relate to NAFTA.

United States proposes rules for Mexican trucks

Article Abstract:

Proposals by the US Dept of Transportation, regarding the rights of Mexican trucks to cross US borders, are examined. Topics include US proposal that Mexican trucks abide by US and Canadian safety standards, proposal for application forms for Mexican trucks to operate in the US Southwest; and proposals for application forms for Mexican trucks to operate in US territory beyond the Southwest.

Altamira LNG project highlights growing oportunities for private sector energy investment in Mexico

Mexico has begun to see results from its efforts to encourage foreign investment in power generation. Shell Gas and Power and El Paso Global LNG are planning to open a re-gassification plant in Altamira.
