Celadon prospers as its trucks cruise the NAFTA trail

Article Abstract:

Celadon Group Inc., a 13 yeard old trucking company, is poised to benefit from rapid growth in transborder traffic linking the industrial Midwest US and Mexico, along with rival Contract Freighters Inc., according to analysts at Furman Selz LLC. The company's revenues have more than doubled since 1994, when Celadon went public, following passage of NAFTA. Celadon, which had been formed to transport auto components to a Mexican Chrysler plant, expanded its capacity last month with the $19 million purchase of Canadian trucking firm Gerth Transport. Celadon also transports auto components to Mexico for Daimler-Benz AG's Freightliner truck plant and auto factories of Volkswagen AG and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Celadon carries other products northward for companies such as Mattel Inc., General Electric Co. and Pier 1 Imports Inc.

Article Abstract:

Sara Lee Corp. voluntarily recalled all its meat products put out from its Zeeland, Michigan, plant and has stopped almost all production there for the time being. Four people have died from tainted hot dogs that might have come from this Michigan plant. More and more, meat packers would rather do the recall early on than risk even higher costs in the courtroom.
