Article Abstract:

Chemical industry earnings and securities are extremely volatile, highly responsive to national economic conditions and vary greatly as to performance between individual companies. Prices are expected to rise in 1996 and earnings could possibly grow but experts believe that these predictions could shift rapidly. Investors should be wary of dividend yields as they are not always indicative of chemical industry securities true value.

A cyclical downturn in late 1997 is expected in the chemical industry. Short term stock investments should be made in chemical companies that will benefit from increases in oil and gas prices. Long term stock investments should be made in chemical companies that will be able to handle the cyclical downturn expected.
