Clarity of Manager Roles and Performance of R&D Multidisciplinary Projects in Matrix Structures

Article Abstract:

When the matrix structure is used in cross-disciplinary projects, there tends to be conflict in the roles of project and disciplinary managers. The two roles are examined to determine if conflict can be avoided. The findings are based on a study made in a laboratory in Brazil. Seven tables illustrate the study. Results indicate that clarity of the roles of project and functional managers are an important factor in technical performance when the matrix form is used. Results of the study are considered tentativeand should not be generalized. Further study is needed.

Occupational roles and expectations of research scientists and research managers in scientific research institutions

Article Abstract:

Public research institutes are compelled to conduct research that will benefit industries due to financial constraints. The change in focus of these research institutes also affects the career plans of scientists and research managers who work for them. In the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, organizational tension exists between science and business management. A more effective integration of the institute's industrial and scientific goals is needed.
