Greek Cypriots elected Clerides president in a Feb 14, 1993, run-off election against sitting president George Vassiliou. Clerides, a member of the conservative Democratic Rally party, begins his five-year term Mar 1, 1993. Vassiliou had been president since 1988.

Ex-dissident Kim elected president

Former political dissident Kim Young Sam was elected president of South Korea on Dec 18, 1992. He was the candidate of the ruling Democratic Liberal Party. The balloting was the first all-civilian presidential election in over 30 years.

Sixto Duran Ballen became president of Ecuador on Jul 5, 1992, in a run-off election with Jaime Nebot Saadi. Voters had become unhappy with the interventionist economic policies of former Pres Rodrigo Borja Cevallos.
