Computer 'brain' outperforms doctors in diagnosing heart attack patients

Article Abstract:

An 'artificially intelligent' computer was used in an experiment at the University of California's San Diego Medical Center to diagnose patients with chest pains to determine if the pains were symptoms of heart attack. The computer system used the same sort of data that would be available to an attending physician. The program provided a correct diagnosis in 97 percent of the cases presented to it, outperforming human doctors. According to William G. Baxt, who will publish results of the experiment in the Dec 1991 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, such computerized aids for diagnosis could be useful in emergency room situations where doctors must make instant judgements.

SEC gets closer to electronic filing

Article Abstract:

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) plans to implement a new electronic filing system that will require an estimated 11,500 public companies to file their reports, prospectuses and required disclosures electronically. The new system is called the Electronic Data Gathering Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) system and will eliminate the use of paper in SEC filings. EDGAR is still a pilot project in Aug 1991, with only 225 public companies using the system. The SEC plans on adding between 800 and 1,000 companies to EDGAR per fiscal quarter until mid-1995. EDGAR has been menaced by cost overruns, technological glitches and political inconveniences.
