IBM to join ranks of firms developing computers that recognize handwriting

Article Abstract:

IBM plans to license software from Go Corp for the hand-held computers it is developing. The new products are IBM's first ventures into electronic note pads with handwriting character recognition capabilities. IBM usually uses Microsoft Corp's operating systems for its microcomputers but no longer wishes to rely on one vendor for software. IBM also expresses concern that Microsoft bases its software for note pads on MS-DOS. IBM believes MS-DOS is keyboard-oriented and cannot be appropriately used as an operating system for other types of input. IBM intends the new computers for mobile workers who are not comfortable using a keyboard and would rather enter handwritten notes. IBM's interest in Go's software and in note-pad computers generally is expected to increase interest by other firms in developing such products.
