Congress passes liability-suit limits

Article Abstract:

Congress passed a compromise bill in Mar 1996, that limits the amount of punitive damages that a consumer can recover in product-liability cases. Pres Clinton indicated that he plans to veto the bill. Supporters of the bill accused Clinton of bowing to pressure from the trial lawyers lobby.

House passes diluted antiterrorism bill

Article Abstract:

The House passed an antiterrorism bill on Mar 14, 1996, by a vote of 229-191. The Senate passed a more comprehensive version of the bill in Jun 1995, and a conference committee will reconcile the two bill's differences. Pres Clinton expressed disappointment at the House's weaker version.

House, Senate pass overhaul bill

Article Abstract:

Both houses of Congress passed a welfare reform bill Dec 21-22, 1995, that would reduce funding for welfare by $58 billion over seven years. The bill would eliminate guaranteed assistance and distribute money via block grants to states. Pres Clinton plans to veto the bill.
