Cracked port gives rail link a sinking feeling

Article Abstract:

A 490-meter-long crack is threatening the new port at Darwin, Australia. Possibly caused by the instability of a mud layer beneath the port, the crack has caused the postponement of the completion date from January 1998 to October 1998. While some politicians claim that the project itself is a mistake, others profess confidence in it and in the triviality of the crack.

RailEs new big ticket

A feasibility study on a new rail route between Melbourne and Brisbane which is estimated to cost between $1.7 billion and $3.1 billion, will be announced by the Federal Government. The feasibility study will cost $10 million. The details of executing the study are described.
