Deutsche Bank must downsize to shape up

Article Abstract:

Deutsche Bank AG needs to reduce staff and increase operational efficiency to increase its value and avoid becoming a takeover target. Rolf Breuer, the bank's chairman of the board of managing directors, set goals of a 25% pre-tax return on equity and an operating profit of $6.3 billion by 2001. In 1998, the profit was just $2.3 billion and a 14% return on equity. Deutsche Bank employs 96,000 and netted an average of $23,000 per employee in 1998, compared to $34,000 for Credit Suisse. Business areas in which to cut include German lending and insurance.

Macquarie's selective outsourcing pays a healthy dividend

Article Abstract:

Macquarie Bank saves $1 million (Australian) each year by outsourcing certain aspects of its information technology needs. Areas such as mainframes are outsourced, but the development of applications is kept within the company in order to foster innovations. Macquarie's development team is engaged in Internet communication efforts as well as extensive preparations for the year 2000 and possible computer problems.

NAB sees green pastures in Ireland

Article Abstract:

The National Irish Bank, subsidiary of the National Australia Bank, will deploy several plans to foster market growth. The bank will court both smaller businesses and multinationals, drawn to the country's low-cost structure. National Irish will add more automatic teller machines to its current network, and introduce interactive phone and mobile banking.
