Walt Disney Co's $19 billion acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC Inc on Jul 31, 1995, was viewed favorably by stock analysts, and will create the world's largest entertainment firm. Westinghouse Electric's offer to acquire CBS for $5.4 billion on Aug 1, 1995, is subject to FCC approval.

EU sets worldwide British beef ban; Britain suggests partial herd slaughter

The perceived threat of transmission of 'mad cow disease' from cows to humans caused the European Union to ban export of any beef products from Britain. Similarities between bovine spongiform encephalopathy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease raised public concerns.
