Drugstore industry

Article Abstract:

Drugstores seem to have weathered the US recession relatively well, and several factors will positively influence their future performance, including continued consolidation within the industry, the aging of the US population and the increasing use of managed care plans that encourage the use of prescription drugs. Profits in 1995 are expected to be healthy, and the drugstore industry as a whole is ranked among the top 10% as a good investment risk.

Article Abstract:

The case between several pharmaceutical companies and independent retailers concerning price discrimination was settled out of court in Feb 1996, though another case is still being pursued. The proposed Revco and Rite Aid merger is also being investigated by the government. Drugstores are also expanding product lines and becoming convenience stores. Drugstore industry

Article Abstract:

Competition from discounters and combination retailers is forcing weaker drugstore chains to fold or decrease operations. Market share pressure is also increasing consolidation. Pharmacy sales are rising with the aging American population and managed healthcare. Profit margins are lower but offset by technology, and many drug chains are becoming convenience stores. Several stocks have good long-term prospects due to above-average earnings.
