EC, U.S. pursue research link in electronics

Article Abstract:

The US and the European Economic Community are holding private talks to explore ways to cooperate in the development of information technology products. The talks are purposed to combat foreign competition, especially from Japan. The goal is to coordinate research in such areas as computers, semiconductors and similar technology between US and European firms. Such cooperation is considered increasingly important as Europe's computer industry suffers declines and as Japanese electronics companies begin to acquire significant ownership shares in European computer makers. Government representatives and scientists are involved in talks being held in Brussels. Further talks are expected, with a specific plan for ties between the US semiconductor organization SEMATECH and the European semiconductor development program, JESSI, under consideration.

Digital plans joint research with Olivetti

Article Abstract:

Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) and Italy's Ing C. Olivetti & Co agree to collaborate on research at Olivetti's 30-person laboratory in Cambridge, England. The facility does research that involves multimedia technologies, computer networking and other research areas. The agreement is one of a series of agreements between the companies, and some industry observers believe that a broader alliance is being forged, but both DEC and Olivetti deny this. Company officials contend that the joint research work stems from arrangements among longstanding ties between key Olivetti and DEC engineers and there are no plans for more strategic relations.
