Edging Toward a Free Market in Farming

Article Abstract:

After much debate, and may long hours, the Agriculture and Food Act of 1981 was passed. Although compromises had to be made by special interest groups, and no one got everything they wanted, those who worked on the bill hope that the provisions in the bill will be livable for all. It is hoped that the specifics of the bill will protect those in this high risk industry, while providing farmers an incentive to be increasingly self sufficient and reducing the dollars the government spends on farm surpluses. The farm industry needs the economic incentive to produce, and although food exports account for one sixth of total United States exports, the industry still relies on subsidies to remain profitable. There are many specifics within the bill relating to such farm industries as dairy, peanuts, tobacco and others.

Major Issues in Congress That Could Affect Your Business

Article Abstract:

A monthly summary of the bills pending in Congress, their potential impact on businesses, and whom to contact about the issues is given. The issues facing Congress in March, 1983 include the federal budget, social security, a bankruptcy law, clean air and water acts, payment-in-kind for farmers, and withholding. The effect of some of these issues would be to decrease the federal deficit, increase taxes, encourage economic expansion through less stringent environmental protection regulations, and slow federal support of crop surplusses.
