El Salvador peace pact sets cease-fire date

The government of El Salvador and representatives of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front on Jan 1, 1992, reached a tentative cease-fire agreement ending the country's 12-year-old civil war. The negotiations were led by United Nations Sec Gen Javier Perez de Cuellar.

El Salvador peace treaty signed

Representatives of Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation and the El Salvadorean government Jan 16, 1992, signed a formal peace treaty ending the country's 12-year-old civil war. The treaty talks had been mediated by the United Nations.

War formally ends; army purge halted

The 12-year civil war in El Salvador formally ended Dec 15, 1992, with an official ceremony in San Salvador, the nation's capital. The National Day of Reconciliation marked the end of a conflict that took some 75,000 lives.
