Article Abstract:
The first divestiture of electric power industry generating assets was accomplished in early 1997, with several others pending, and this could prove to be beneficial for high-cost utilities. However, several US electric utilities will be adversely affected by the windfall profits tax imposed by the British Labor government. There are several income stocks in this industry, but electric utilities are not expected to perform well in 1997.

A notice of proposed rulemaking regarding recovery of stranded investment and transmission access has been issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This will effect cost recovery and access discrimination for the electric utilities in the Western US. Many state utility agencies are also planning regulatory changes. High dividend ratios and competition make electric utility stocks unattractive in 1995.
