Evolving perceptions of clinical management in acute hospitals in England

Article Abstract:

A study of clinical management activity in an acute general hospital in the north-west of England provides insight into the evolving perception of the role of clinical manager. It also gives insight into ongoing changes in the medical profession and the National Health Service. The investigation consisted of a series of interviews conducted during one business cycle. Results demonstrate that important issues include the balance between the clinical perspective and the management perspective, and that the clinical management function is highly significant in determining health services.

Managerialist professionalism: the destruction of a non-conforming subculture

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the nature and origins of the new managerialist nursing profession and to analyze the basis of nursing claims to professionalism within the UK National Health Service. The complex interplay of professionalism and managerialism among different shifts and the consequent dissonance between groups were explored. Results illustrate the subcultural exclusion of night-nurses who are considered outsiders by their day-shift colleagues and managers.
