Lucent is set to buy leader in voice mail; AT&T spinoff will pay $1.8 billion for Octel

Article Abstract:

Lucent Technologies has agreed to purchase Octel Communications for $1.8 billion in cash. This will be Lucent's first major acquisition since its split from AT&T in 1996. By acquiring Octel, Lucent will strengthen its position as the largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment in the nation. Octel is a major player in the voice mail industry and accounts for approximately 25% of the market. A large portion of its customer base is telephone service companies and multinational corporations, which is the voice mail market's fasted growing segment. Octel's stock holders will receive $31 in cash for each their shares, which is approximately 15.9% higher than their value was at the time of the purchase.

MCI is said to weigh bid for Mediaone; would join Comcast to oppose AT&T offer

Article Abstract:

MCI Worldcom Inc. is contemplating joining Comcast Corporation in its bid to acquire Mediaone Group before AT&T can complete its acquisition of the cable operator. Comcast has been trying to find partners to buy the company and ownership of Mediaone would make MCI Worldcom a major holder of another cable operations and prevent AT&T from acquiring yet another cable concern. America Online and Microsoft Corp. have been named as potential investors as well.
