Expert support systems for new product development decision making: a modeling framework and applications

Article Abstract:

A modeling framework is developed by combining knowledge-based expert systems and decision support systems technology and decision support systems with management science methods and techniques for evaluating new product development projects. The framework considers the strategic decision to commit to full-scale development of the product, with the project thought to be at the stage on the development cycle where the viability of the product and its technology has to be demonstrated by committing an important resource to the project. Aside from proving that management science and expert support systems can be combined, the study introduces new methodologies for applying the analytic hierarchy process and discriminant analysis to acquire, model and process expert knowledge and data.

Negotiation analysis: a characterization and review

Article Abstract:

Negotiation analysis aims to provide prescriptive advice to one party involved in a negotiation based on the assumption that the actions of other parties involved follow a certain goal-oriented logic. A key characteristic of this emergent approach to multiple decision-making is that it reduces the importance given to game-theoretic solutions and instead focuses on how the parties involved in a negotiation adjust their perceptions of the 'zone of possible agreement.' Other key characteristics of this emergent approach are that it emphasizes the need to understand the underlying objectives of all parties involved and takes into consideration the possible alternatives to a negotiated outcome.
