Exploiting and creating knowledge through customer-supplier relationships: lessons from a case study

Article Abstract:

The customer-supplier relationship between the Italian subsidiaries of Asea Brown Boveri and IBM shows the complexities of vertical coordination processes. The companies must be well aware of their internal organization to have an effective vertical coordination of companies with complementary knowledge. The companies must ensure that their resources and relative expertise are matched and new formal and informal processes and incentive schemes are designed. They must also ensure that their internal organization of the companies are compatible with efforts to combine competencies and knowledge bases.

Project selection by scoring for a large R&D organisation in a developing country

Article Abstract:

A project selection process has been devised for employment in the research and development department of an electrical equipment producer in a developing nation. A scoring model is utilized to choose and categorize projects which offer more goals. The research concluded that the research culture of the research and development department manifests the environment by which the study is done. Furthermore, the results indicated that the methods developed can be used in big research and development divisions in developing or developed nations.

Management of dispersed product development teams: the role of information technologies

Article Abstract:

IBM's experience in using information technology (IT) to manage dispersed product R&D teams offers lessons on how to maximize the potential application of IT in transnational development. Intensive utilization of IT enhanced cooperation within dispersed R&D teams at IBM. Moreover, IT led to the establishment of a personal network, the sharing of technical information, promotion of creativity and the coordination of decentralized project tasks.
