Financial markets: regulators urge no new derivatives rules

Article Abstract:

The financial collapse of Orange County, CA, led to the call for stricter regulations for the sale of derivatives. Banking regulatory agencies opposed such a move in testimony before Congress in Jan 1995, claiming that the losses were due to mismanagement, not lack of regulations.

Rubin urges bank-regulation reform

Article Abstract:

Rubin's reform proposals would replace much of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act with provision that would allow banks to sell securities and insurance. Such changes would make banks more competitive and enable them to make more profit. Similar proposals are described.

Derivatives regulation volunteered

Article Abstract:

Six securities firms that account for 90% of all derivatives trading announced a voluntary regulation plan on Mar 9, 1995. The plan was drawn up under the guidance of the SEC and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission. Details of the new guidelines are given.
