Real estate investment trust

Article Abstract:

The relative safety and outstanding performance of real estate investment trust (REIT) securities which reached record highs in 1996 are beginning to become questionable, especially for the short-term investors who have celebrated previous high dividends. The volatility of REITs in not recovering from market drops makes the usual short-term investment questionable but, ironically, increases interest and opportunities for long-term investment.

Financial services

Article Abstract:

Rising delinquencies and fears that gain-on-sale accounting models may not be viable have shaken the financial services industry a number of times in the 1990s. However, the moderate expansion of the economy during the same time period and macro-economic trends have had positive influences on the industry. These stocks have performed well in the bull market of the 1990s, but investors must evaluate them individually before making commitments.

Financial services

Article Abstract:

Concern about the Asian economic crisis has spread to the US and this has affected American consumer confidence in terms of expectations over future economic conditions. However, mortgage banks should benefit from lower US interest rates and non-bank and credit card lenders should also do well, regardless of stock-market conditions. Investors, though, need to consider both safety and timeliness when evaluating financial services stocks.
