Canberra has the highest gross household disposable income of any state or territory, with high salaries and education, unemployment being lower than average between 4% and 4.5%. The Australian Capital Territory is shielded from national economic cycles, as it has no farm sector or heavy manufacturing or mining sectors.

GST may save local councils: Canberra is pressing the states to respond to a report on the funding crisis in local infrastructure

The pressure of the Australian local government for a share of GST is examined. According to the federal Minister for Local Government, Ian Campbell, the growing GST revenue could increase funding to the local revenue that is facing a severe crisis.
