Firm dynamics and industrialization in the Chinese economy in transition: implications for small business policy

Article Abstract:

The empirical relationship between the size of domestic enterprises including state-owned enterprises, collective-owned enterprises and other enterprises and their firm dynamics is analyzed by comparing their growth with Gibrat's Law. Panel data of four Shanghai, China, industries for the period 1989-1992 are used to test Gibrat's law. Empirical results show that small enterprises have the edge in creating jobs than larger enterprises in output growth and job creation.
