Five EC observers die as Yugoslav jet downs copter

Five European Community (EC) observers died Jan 7, 1992, when their helicopter was shot down over Croatia by a Yugoslavian jet. The EC suspended its observer missions until it could receive assurances from the Yugoslavian government that observers would be safe.

The adversaries in the Yugoslavian civil war agreed to comply with a peace accord negotiated during a conference sponsored by the United Nations and the European Community. Some of the participants questioned the effectiveness of the accord.

The US and the EC have recognized the independence of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The US also has reversed the position it held in Jan 1992 by recognizing Croatia and Slovenia as independent republics.
