Florida district ruled unconstitutional

Article Abstract:

Federal judges declared that the creation of a black majority district in northern Florida was unconstitutional. The 3 judges ruled that the district was created to give greater power to black voters and did not serve a compelling political interest. Florida has until May 22, 1996 to redraw the district.

Court redraws Georgia districts

Article Abstract:

An appeals court ruled on Dec 13, 1995, that two of the three predominately black election districts in Georgia must be redrawn. The ruling will affect the 2nd and 11th Congressional districts, but the 5th district will stay the same. White Democratic candidates may benefit from the ruling.
