Former Corning Inc. unit Quest Diagnostics has agreed to pay the US government $15 million to settle a suit alleging that Damon Clinical Laboratories cheated Medicare by performing unnecessary blood tests. Damon's misdeeds were first brought into question before Corning Chemical Laboratories bought the laboratory in 1993. In 1996, Corning Chemical Labs, Damon's successor, agreed to pay the government $119 million to settle a case concerning Damon's business practices before the acquisition. Quest's settlement represents a facet of the government's case against Damon that was not included in the 1996 settlement.

Browning-Ferris unit to pay $1.5 million in pollution settlement

Browning-Ferris Inc. has reached an agreement to pay a fine of $1.5 million as part of a pollution settlement. Federal officials charged the company with illegally dumping contaminated water into the sewage system of Washington DC. The Justice Department alleged that Browning-Ferris dumped a mixture of rainwater and wastewater into a city sewer. The government also said that the company did not give advance notice of the discharge.

OrthoLogic agrees to pay US$1 million in lawsuit settlement

OrthoLogic Corp. announced that it would pay $1 million to the Justice Department as part of a legal settlement related to a 1996 lawsuit. In that lawsuit, the company was charged with submitting false reimbursement claims to government health-care programs. OrthoLogic would not acknowledge any wrongdoing or liability on its part. The company said that it agreed to the payment to avoid the cost and distraction of a lawsuit.
