Apple Computer says it is considering cuts in executive salaries

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer is considering reducing executive pay by up to ten percent as one of the many attempts to cut costs in the wake of disappointing quarterly results. Additionally, the company has signed an agreement to distribute its low-end Macintosh Classic and LC microcomputers through the CompUSA discount superstores. The agreement marks the first time Apple has distributed its products through anything other than its established base of specialty computer stores. The company has already announced plans to reduce its work force by ten percent worldwide. Some analysts believe the cut in executive pay is an attempt by management to boost the morale of lower-level employees concerned about the layoffs and the prospect of other actions.

Reporter's notebook: even cabbies get drawn into computer-show act

Article Abstract:

Comdex/Fall 1990 occurs at a time when many caution that the computer industry is in a downturn. A record of 1,850 companies were represented at what some label the largest US trade show. Some companies that offer low-priced IBM-compatible machines are confident that they will prosper even in a recession and indicate that business is up. The laptop computer market seems to be progressing rather quickly and may soon overcome the last hurdle that will allow it to match the capabilities of desktop machines - : high-quality displays. The attendance at the conference is expected to exceed the 118,000 in attendance in 1989. Comdex/Fall 1990 was held in Las Vegas and covered a space equivalent to 50 football fields.
