Shiina of IBM Japan to step down as president; restructuring is planned

Article Abstract:

Takeo Shiina is resigning from his position as president of IBM Japan Ltd and is taking on the position of chairman - a job customarily taken by Japanese presidents of Japanese companies when they retire - as part of a restructuring program by IBM Japan. The restructuring program will mirror that of IBM's American operations. The company will split into two subsidiaries. The general business division will market to individual users and to mid-sized companies, and the services business division will be in charge of promoting IBM Japan's services in a new effort by the company to enter markets other than hardware. Kakutaro Kitashiro, the company's vice president of marketing and services, will become president. Shiina will keep the chief executive officer title during the transition period, after which he is expected to abandon it.

Sony is turning more cautious after reverses

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp is changing its management style and will henceforth be more cautious, says Ken Iwaki, who is deputy president in charge of corporate strategy. According to Iwaki, Sony will reduce capital spending, strive to get more profits out of the company's mainstay businesses, and look for alliances with other companies, especially in the area of computers. Sony, which was expected to make a major effort in 'multimedia' in the 1990s, now will try to refocus, working out a redefinition of the company's computer/multimedia plans. There is considerable speculation about a possible cooperative relationship between Sony and Apple Computer Inc. Iwaki says only that Sony is talking with various companies including Apple, IBM and Microsoft Corp.
