General Motors Corp. warned that the continuing labor strike based at its Flint, MI plant, now in its fifth week, could threaten a sales crash for the 1998 summer season, which would precipitate layoffs. Because GM has lost far more money with the widespread stoppage of its North American operations than it would by conceding to worker demands at Flint, many on Wall Street are questioning the economic soundness of GM's strategy. GM's hardline approach has attempted to get the two Flint strikes declared illegal, but the United Auto Workers union said this would not resolve the real issues at hand. GM's long-term strategy is to get the strikes declared illegal, it could tighten the loose no-strike clause negotiated in its next UAW contract, which could prevent many future local strikes from escalating like this one.

Starbucks Corp. plans to test new paper cup

Starbucks is working with Solo Cup Co. and others to come up with an environmentally-friendly coffee cup that keeps the contents hot without burning customers' fingers, all for little or no additional cost. A new cup is being test-marketed in San Francisco and Washington D.C. that is tan rather than bleached white paper and that has dimples that create little air pockets for insulation.

McDonald's to announce first layoffs this week
