Gateway posts loss on 15% sales decline

Article Abstract:

Personal computer company Gateway Inc. has announced a 15% sales drop for its first quarter, with a $502.9 million loss and a decline of $1.56 a share, 56 cents more than analysts predicted. Gateway, suffering from a fierce competitive market is leaving OfficeMax and other retail stores and will concentrate on selling computers via the phone, Internet and Gateway Country outlets. The company's losses were reflected in a $43 million charge from its involvement in Vitech America, as well as a consumer loan charge of $100 million and $389 million for restructuring and layoffs.

Gateway will match its rivals' PC prices

Gateway Inc. is lauching a new ad print and TV ad campaign vowing to match the personal computer prices of its rivals, and actually beat them by $1. Happy consumers could see a price war, though Hewlett-Packard balks at the thought. After a first quarter loss of $503 million, Gateway chief Ted Waitt is being pro-active with a campaign that plans to win market share from competitors.

Compaq picks an insider to top post

Computer manufacturer, Compaq Computer Corp. has announced that Michael D. Capellas is now the president and chief executive. The move comes as a surprise to industry insiders as Mr. Capellas is not well known, but he has served as internal computer operations vice president at Compaq since last August.
