Germany: Kohl wins support in local elections

Article Abstract:

Support for Germany's Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, was evidenced in the election of three members of his Free Democratic Party in elections in Baden-Wurttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Schleswig-Holstein. Members of the opposition Social Democratic Pary lost the elections.

Unemployment continues to rise

Article Abstract:

The unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in western Germany and 15.3% in eastern Germany in Jul 1993. Reports on inflation, GDP, the 1994 budget, financing of long-term nursing home care, privatization and other reforms are presented.

Kohl sees tax hike for eastern costs

Article Abstract:

Chancellor Kohl stated that the high costs of reunification would cause Germany to increase taxes in 1995. Germany probably will become responsible for the debts of eastern Germany, which total about 400 billion marks.
