Goodman Fielder, Australia's largest food manufacturer, needs to focus on growth in 1998. Goodman CEO David Hearn and his management team have decreased costs, acquired additional businesses and increased efficiency since joining the firm in Sep 1995. The share price of the company has increased from $1.35 in Sep 1995 to $2.43 in Jan 1998. Net debt has decreased to $370.8 million in early 1998 from $620.5 million in late 1996.

Quick-footed Parmalat goes from zero to $45 million in 20 months

Article Abstract:

Parmalat Australia focuses on new products, innovation and marketing to increase sales of its food products. Screwtop caps for dairy cartons and unusual drink flavors have already been introduced. In early 1998, Parmalat will launch several new entries including fruit juice, with coffee, desserts and sports drinks to follow. It will also begin in-store dairy product sampling and a TV advertising campaign.

Sanitarium chases the breakfast 'skippers.'

Australia's Sanitarium Health Food Company has launched Up & Go, a drink targeted to consumers who skip breakfast. Made from dairy products, soy bean and rice, Up & Go is aimed at the 34% of polled respondents who say they sometimes skip the meal. Sold in small cartons, the item is convenient and portable, and as a drink may appeal to those who are not hungry in the morning.
