Early contenders for the the Republican Party's presidential nomination for 1996 were Sen. Phil Gramm and Lamar Alexander. Along with Senate Majority leader Robert J. Dole, these personalities hope to cash in on the public mandate given to the party in the 1994 congressional elections.

Buchanan narrowly defeats Dole in New Hampshire primary; Alexander is close third

Article Abstract:

Buchanan won the Republican New Hampshire primary on Feb 20, 1996, earning 27.4% of the vote. Dole took second place with 26.3%, and Alexander came in third with 22.8%. Buchanan's victory raised doubts about whether Dole, formerly the front-runner, can still win the nomination.
