ABC and ERP: partners at last?

Article Abstract:

The integration of the activity-based costing and management (ABC/ABM) methodology into the popular enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems can help boost the acceptability of ABC/ABM to executive decisionmakers. ERP vendors such as SAP AG, PeopleSoft Inc and Oracle Corp have decided to enter the ABC market through equity investment in or partnerships with ABC developers. This union validates ABC/ABM as an effective cost measurement approach, providing management accountants and financial managers who have been advocating it a greater strategic value to senior executives. Moreover, this development facilitates the combination of analytic ABC/ABM applications and operational ABC/ABM, enabling management accountants and financial managers to act as proactive business strategists.

ABM at Lawson: putting the technology to work

Article Abstract:

Minneapolis, MN-based Lawson Software implemented activity-based management throughout the organization as part of a business process reengineering program. ABM and activity-based costing components were integrated with the company's proprietary software called LAWSON INSIGHT Business Management System. Lawson commissioned Arthur Andersen LLP to provide the expertise in ABM planning and implementation. A cross-functional team consisting of both Lawson and Arthur Andersen staff was assembled to set a timeline and design the project. The ABM initiative required the team to understand the critical business issues, collect information and change business processes to achieve its objectives. Lawson is optimistic about the results of the pilot project.
