Guardian Royal to acquire U.S. insurance unit from ING

Article Abstract:

Guardian Royal Exchange Group PLC has reached an agreement to purchase ING Group NV's US property and casualty insurance division in a $1.15 billion deal. The deal will strengthen Guardian's operations in the US. Guardian will pay ING $775 million to acquire the Netherlands Insurance Group of Cos. Netherlands Insurance provides property and casualty insurance in several US states. The deal will expand Guardian's presence in the Midewestern and Northeastern US.

Monsanto agrees to acquire Unilever wheat-seed line

Article Abstract:

Monsanto Co. has reached an agreement to acquire a wheat-breeding business from Unilever Group for $525 million. Monsanto said that the transaction would end its latest series of seed company purchases. Since 1995, the company has been acquiring plant-breeding firms in an attempt to become one of the two dominant crop-biotechnology companies in the world. DuPont Co. is the other dominant force in the industry.

Nomura sets acquisition of Thorn

Article Abstract:

Nomura International PLC announced that it will be acquiring Thorn PLC for 980 million pound sterling ($1.63 billion). The move is the most recent in a series of deals for Nomura. It also brings about the end of Thorn's public trading. Thorn was unable to explain its rent-to-own business to the stock market in Britain. Thorn is a international conmsumer-rental and rental-purchase company.
