PC-sales growth slowed in fourth period

International Data Corp. and Dataquest report that sales of personal computers slowed to 24% in the fourth quarter. Global personal computer shipments rose by 19% from the year before. Dell Computer and Hewlett-Packard increased market share over Compaq Computers and IBM. This might reflect a change in buying habits; people have been buying computers all year long, as opposed to mostly the fourth quarter. Some analysts see a coming saturation of the personal computer market.

Hewlett Packard Co. surprised analysts and and beat their forecasts for the second quarter. Sales of computer peripherals and services seem to have pushed the company to a 34% profit this last quarter. It seems they are looking forward to a successful 3rd quarter as well.

Dell beat Compaq in 3rd-period U.S. PC sales

International Data Corp. and Dataquest Inc. report that Dell Computer seizes the lead in the personal-computer market over Compaq Computer as they both report third quarter earnings. Dell is dominating the U.S. market while Compaq remains number one globally, although that lead is narrowing by 13%, as Dell's is growing by 11% a share. All results reflect cheaper prices for personal computers worldwide.
