Haiti: military agrees to human-rights monitors

Article Abstract:

The military government of Haiti has agreed to permit 40 human-rights observers to enter the country to monitor the first stage of a United Nations-sponsored plan to restore democracy. The government backed away from previous demands that would have prevented the plan from being implemented.

Taiwan: Lee inaugurated, offers to visit China

Taiwan's first elected president, Lee Teng-hui, was inaugurated on May 20, 1996, and said he would visit China to help improve relations between the province and the mainland government. The discussion would focus on cooperation so Taiwan could maintain its separate identity.
