Harold M. Williams, Three Years Later

Article Abstract:

From 1976-1980, Harold M. Williams was chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. In an interview with Mr. Williams, he comments on his successor, John S. R. Shad. Williams comments that the agency's efforts at integration were initiated under his leadership. The current commission is viewed as too lax regarding restraints on abuses in the corporate sector. Concerning disclosure of executive compensation, the commission should not have acted to reduce the amount of disclosure. The question of shareholder participation cannot be easily resolved. Harold M. Williams is now president and chief executive of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
