Headhunter surmounts big obstacles in race to locate president for Wang

Article Abstract:

Richard W. Miller, presidentand CEO of Wang Laboratories Inc, has Thomas Neff to thank for his new position. Neff is an executive recruiter who matches Miller and others with companies in need of executives. Wang's record $424.3 million for the FY ended Jun 30, 1989, almost makes Neff's job easier: companies in trouble are a challenge to would-be presidents. Neff's strategy for finding a successor to Frederick A. Wang consisted of presenting a list to An Wang, the company's founder, that named executives with financial strategy strengths who were available immediately. Miller, who was on the list, met with the elder Wang, who decided to make an offer to the former RCA and General Electric executive. Neff, president of Spencer Stuart and Associates Inc, will likely bill Wang one-third of Miller's yearly base salary for his 10 days of work.
