Hello, Turbotax, I hope you can help me! As tax deadline approaches, software users keep calling

Article Abstract:

Intuit's technical support center advises thousands of users daily on a variety of the functions of its Turbotax software, which currently holds 64% of the tax preparation software market. During tax season the center fields up to 4,500 calls per day on topics ranging from loading the program to foreign income concerns. The company expects to get 390,000 calls over the peak season. Intuit employs 250 people to handle these calls, most make $7 per hour. Advisers receive four weeks of training before they are placed in front of a PC with software ready to be used to answer questions. Technical support staff are given a free copy of the software to practice with. Intuit says its employees will not give tax advice, but, as a matter of the material, they often guide users through depreciation concerns and advise on the best method of separating deferred interest from non-deferred.

Article Abstract:

Computer Associates's top three executives received 20.25 million additional company shares worth $1.1 billion when company shares closed at $55.125 a share on May 21, 1998. The performance marked the 60th day in which the shares exceeded $53.33 in a 12-month period, which awarded the shares under a 1995 pay plan. CEO Charles B. Wang earned 12.15 million shares, worth $669.8 million, while Pres Sanjay Kumar drew 6.075 shares worth $334.9 million and Executive Vice Pres Russell M. Artzt gained 2.025 million shares worth $111.6 million. Federal taxes are expected to reach approximately $458 million, or some 8.3 million shares, and a company official said the executives will return some of their shares to cover those expenses. Computer Associates reported net earnings of $1.2 billion and revenue of $4.7 billion in 1997.
