Here is a dream of a portable computer, or one close to it

Article Abstract:

Sony's impressive $2,000 VAIO 505G sets itself apart from other portable computers with dimensions of less than one inch thick and slightly less than three pounds. The Windows computer is designed to attract users with its rounded look and smaller 10.4-in active-matrix screen for use in smaller airplane seats. Other features include a 200 MHz Pentium MMX processor, 32MB of RAM, a 2.1GB hard disk and 56-Kbps modem. Users may need time to adjust to a keyboard that measures barely less than 90% of regular width. The smaller key sizes, however, could create frustration. Adding 32MB of RAM to the current 64MB capacity for around $75 will boost the hard disk and therefore minimize occasional keyboard delays. Sony today is scheduled to debut its fancier $2,700 VAIO 505GX portable computer, which features a 266MHz processor and a fast IEEE 1394 port. The VAIO 505G and VAIO 505GX will reach the market on Jul 24, 1998.

Computer has a heat warning but isn't that hot

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Electronics America's $200, Amity CN portable computer is available at Egghead computer stores and comes with a warning against users holding it directly on their laps to avoid low-temperature burns. The company claims the warnings are for the Japanese version of the portable Amity and that the American model has an improved designed that does a better job of dissipating heat. The computer comes with two built-in PC Card slots and microphone and audio input jacks. The letter keys are approximately 80% of a normal keyboards but the arrow keys are quite small and the others are so flat that mistakes are easily made. A 133MHz Pentium processor, 1.2GB hard disk and 16MB of RAM is included in the Amity CN, with the option to expand to 48MB of RAM.
