Hewlett-Packard is too busy to notice industry slump: computer maker, now slimmer, is more nimble in pursuing business

Article Abstract:

HP continues to stand out in a flat computer industry market by posting strong revenue gains in several product categories. The reorganized firm posted gains in three crucial areas, with its inkjet printer line, particularly the flagship Deskjet computer printer, leading the way with sales surpassing the $3 billion mark. Also gaining in revenue were the HP minicomputer and workstation lines, both of which surpassed the $1.5 billion mark. Overall, HP registered net income of $306 million for the quarter ended Jan 1, 92, a gain of 49 percent over the year-earlier quarter. Analysts attribute HP's success to a combination of corporate reorganization, rapid product development cycles, work force reduction from 94,000 to 89,000 and a strategy of using economies of scale to lower prices with a view to solidifying market share. Currently, renewed competition within the industry and the downturn of the Japanese and German economies, which provide a big segment of the 56 percent of HP's revenue derived from foreign sales, are central concerns at HP. But HP representatives expect to counter these threats with a number of new and competitively priced products.

Microsoft rivals boil over book about Windows

Article Abstract:

A book titled 'Undocumented Windows,' published by Addison-Wesley, claims to document secret features of the Microsoft Corp Windows graphical user interface (GUI). The book is said to list more than 200 otherwise undocumented 'calls,' which are commands that can be used in applications. Microsoft's rivals are upset, fearing that Microsoft may be unfairly exploiting its dominant position as a supplier of programs such as Windows and MS-DOS. In 1991, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) began an investigation to discover whether Microsoft might be engaging in unfair business practices.
