Hospital sector's current strength to face new pressures

Article Abstract:

Total growth in hospital spending is projected to decline as the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 sets restrictions to Medicare inpatient hospital rates. Although total healthcare industry spending will rise at an average annual rate of 6.5% in 1998-2001, hospital expenditures will decrease from 35% of total healthcare in 1996 to 30% in 2007. The impact of Medicare reimbursement reductions on patient revenues and operating margins will affect hospital earnings in the next few years.

A fragmented industry in transition

Article Abstract:

Healthcare facilities face strong pressure from continued government regulation and the emergence of health maintenance organizations. Thus, several acute care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home healthcare services are expected to consolidate operations in an attempt to adjust to market conditions, remove excess capacity and increase operational efficiency. Incentives are expected to make healthcare providers reduce operating costs.

Influences on member commitment to group purchasing organizations

Article Abstract:

Establishment of trust and gratification of satisfaction help promote commitment among members of group purchasing organizations (GPO). Maintenance of a satisfactory communication between member and GPO and perception of dedication with other co-members are also found to increase commitment among GPO members. On the other hand, the existence of viable alternatives to membership in the GPO creates a negative impact on membership commitment.
