Hospital survival in a managed care environment

Article Abstract:

Hospitals hoping to boost their competitiveness and ensure their survival in a managed care environment must rely on sound managerial accounting procedures. A case study of a private nonprofit institution called Memorial Hospital illustrates the importance of managerial accounting in developing a plan of action to achieve a significant return on revenue. The management of Memorial Hospital has been tasked to conduct research and analysis and make the appropriate decision and recommendations for a bid to cover the hospitalization of members of a health maintenance organization and a plan to lease its excess beds to a nursing home. To this end, a video presentation that emphasizes critical thinking and communication skills is a wise strategy. The video should contain the bid amount, the justification for the recommendation and a discussion of ethical issues involved.

Foreign trade zones

Article Abstract:

Foreign trade zones present opportunities for business enterprises to achieve significant cost savings while improving their operational efficiency and effectiveness. Companies engaged in repackaging, combining and destroying products will benefit from doing business within foreign trade zones because of lower costs. Savings may also be realized by companies that import component parts requiring additional processing since no customs duties are levied on labor, overhead and profit if the processing is done within foreign trade zones. In addition, the costs involved in processing the paperwork as well as the processing fees assessed by the Customs are lower at foreign trade zones. Other benefits of doing business within foreign trade zones include unlimited quotas, lower taxes and increased security.
