Economic recovery in Asia is set to have a beneficial effect on Australia's current account deficit. Some observers feel that international focus on the country's current account deficit will not diminish until the trade deficit goes back to balance.

Winners and losers as the dollar stays down

Article Abstract:

The 10-month slide of the Australian dollar at the beginning of 2000 benefited not only commodity exporters who are able to sell their goods for US-dollar prices, but also industries such as tourism, education, export manufacturing, and the traditional sectors of mining and agriculture. The losers from the weaker Australian dollar include import retailers and wholesalers.

The Finger-crossed budget

Treasurer Peter Costello states that the proposed tax cuts, worth $2.4 billion next year, reflect the strength of the Government's balance sheet but there are no guarantees that expectations would be met. The dangers to the budget mainly come from variables outside the government's control, and the predictions in the budget represent a balance of risks.
