How a confection became a trendy fashion accessory

Article Abstract:

In 1997, sales of breath mints increased 19% in food, discount, and drug stores. Breath mint sales rose to $288 million in those stores. This figure does not include convenience-store sales. It also does not include high-end store sales. The supposed reason for the boom in breath mint interest is that the confection takes the place of cigarettes. The mints have become a social ritual object and a trendy fashion accessory.
