How to focus a sales pitch in cyberspace. (the Hotwired online publication offers advertisers a way to focus their sales pitches) (Internet

Article Abstract:

The Hotwired online publication offers advertisers a way to focus their sales pitches through its smart messaging feature for customizing advertisements. The feature is being tested in Britain via a short-term agreement with Argos Distributors Ltd, a catalog showroom retailer similar to Service Merchandising Co in the US. Hotwired VP for Advertising Rick Boyce says an automobile company, for example, could customize its advertising to focus on various models in different countries in a way similar to the zoned editions of newspapers. Boyce says Hotwired wrote a proprietary script that reads the domain of the computer accessing the publication and assigns the appropriate ad to the home page. The Argos site was developed by Ogilvy London and Supernet, a production company in the UK; it is based on a gift selector that asks users such information as the amount to be spent and the age and sex of the recipient.

From the department of old dogs and new, online tricks that need the old dogs' expertise

Article Abstract:

Autobytel.com Inc. has hired Grey Advertising for traditional ad services to supplement efforts on the interactive front. The online auto seller based in Irvine, California, is spending $20 million on advertising in 1998 and plans to boost that amount substantially for 1999. It was highly successful Super Bowl advertising last January that made the company realize it needs to do much more in the traditional media in order to build brand recognition and loyalty. Plans also include more international exposure and marketing efforts. The firm continues to use RBI Communications Inc. for corporate communications.
