Human guides in jungle of the World Wide Web

Article Abstract:

The Mining Company relies on international specialists to compile information for Web searchers. These guides since Feb 1997 have been searching the Internet and listing the best online destinations for pertinent Web topics like politics, humor or jazz. Many of the 639 guides in more than 20 countries streamline massive Web searches for customers by removing extraneous Web sites and dead links. Other responsibilties include completing a 15-week training course, moderating online chats and writing original material. Company officials say Mining's method provides more of a personal touch and subject passion than search engine giant Yahoo, which uses some people but relies mostly on machines. Privately-held Mining has jumped to 43rd among sites visited from home and work in Sep 1998, compared to 85th in Nov 1997, according to Media Metrix.

The blossoming of Internet chat; moving from gossip, flirting and worse to education, consumer service and even more gossip

Article Abstract:

The way chat rooms on the Internet are being used is changing, diversifying and maturing as its uses in business, consumer service and education are being broadened. Of the 107 million people using the Internet worldwide, it is estimated that 40 to 50 million of them are using chat in some form, such as America Online's (AOL's) Buddy List and Instant Messenger systems. AOL and the Microsoft Network both provide directions on how to enter a chat room. Other options include logging on directly to a chat site such as Big Star or The Women's Network. A new software program called Pow Wow by Tribal Voice allows users to create their own chat rooms with a maximum of 800 people, each of which needs a key to get into.
